Development Studies
The last two decades have witnessed an expansion in the domain and scope of NGO activities. Growth has made the sector visible. Nearly half a million NGOs are operating in the country. Some of the NGOs are well meaning and shouldering responsibilities of efficient planning, networking with partners, executing schemes and managing public funds. In order to accomplish all these tasks, skill must be deep-rooted across the development sector.
EDI has been striving to bring greater professionalism in NGOs by creating a cadre of professionals. EDI is offering an AICTE approved two-year, full-time programme - Post Graduate Diploma in Management – Development Studies (PGDM-DS).
Programme Objectives
The objectives of the programme are to:
- Develop competencies for successfully managing developmental projects in social sectors such as health, education, livelihood generation, natural resource management etc.
- Create specialists in the areas of development research, micro finance and micro enterprise development
- Produce a bunch of social entrepreneurs
- Create a cadre of educators and researchers in the field of development sector
About Programme
This programme lays emphasis on teaching of fundamentals, develops management skills, acquire developmental perspectives and learn application of knowledge. All these are imparted in comprehensive and innovative way. The unique features of this programme are:

PGDM-DS programme is a two-year full time programme offered through six trimesters. Two-year programme has 43 courses besides field components. The programme has six trimesters. Each trimester is continued for a period of 12 to 14 weeks. Each trimester focuses on a specific area of development management and operation. While the first trimester concentrates on the foundation course; second trimester provides macro-perspectives on development. All remaining trimesters are orientated towards providing knowledge and skills to undertake development works. Some courses give insights into applied aspects of development management.
The students undergo summer internships for a period of 8-10 weeks at the end of first year. Students are attached with national/international organizations to carry out different projects. The internship programme is an attempt to institutionalize efforts to bridge the gap between the professional world and the academic institutions. Students are attached with Development Organizations according to their specialization/area of interest. Students are guided for questionnaire development, data collection and report preparation.

Specialisations
Development Research (DR) The objective of this specialisation is to prepare a cadre of researchers, who will be specialised in development research. Students will gain knowledge on various methods of development research. Many research institutions recruit Development Research professionals
Micro Finance & Financial Inclusion (MFFI)
This specialisation aims to create micro finance and micro insurance experts. The students will learn regulatory framework of MFIs, various models of micro finance and loan administration. Similarly students will gain knowledge on various insurance products and group insurance.
Micro Enterprise Development (MED)
The primary objective of this specialisation is to develop cadre of experts, who in turn will create micro entrepreneurs. Students opting for this specialisation will learn about entrepreneurial schemes, entrepreneurial aid institutions, project selection, preparation of project report, market survey etc.
Social Entrepreneurship & CSR (SECSR)
The aim of this specialisation is to create social entrepreneurs. Students will learn about bottom of pyramid market and its relevance for business organisation. This is a new area of entrepreneurship
Pedagogy
The interactive nature of learning experience distinguishes EDI from many other institutions. EDI emphasizes experiential learning. The pedagogy comprises interactive lectures, case-based teachings, experience sharing by development professionals, simulation games, project based workshops, organizational visits and field works. All methods create a truly dynamic learning environment. Teaching and guidance are provided by EDI faculty members and experts from leading development organizations. Students get exposed to various facets of “Development’. The soft skills such as team building, motivation, positive thinking and effective communication are integral part of curriculum.
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
Summer Internship
There are certain aspects of learning that cannot be effectively taught in the academic environment. These aspects can be acquired through on-the-job experience. The internship course focuses attention on many latent attributes, which do not surface in the normal class room situations. These attributes are intellectual ability, professional judgment, decision making ability, inter-disciplinary approach, skills for data handling, ability in written and oral presentation and sense of responsibility etc. Students use all these abilities during internship.
Field Visits: Students field interaction is arranged to acquaint the students about grass root realities of development programme. Here, students get opportunity for independent assessment of programme/process.
Business Plan Preparation: As NGOs are venturing into business, students’ knowledge on all aspects of commercial and social business is essential. While developing business plans; students learn application of tools, techniques and preparation of bankable project reports. Students are attached to faculty members for seeking necessary guidance on contineous basis.
Career in Development Sector
The scope for the development sector professionals is vast. They are preferred in corporate sector, public sector, NGOs, training/research institutions and other National and International Organizations for lucrative jobs. Many corporate prefer local candidates with management skills as they are familiar with local community. The jobs offered are in areas such as Natural Resource Management, Community Development and Livelihood Generation.
An indicative list for likely employers is:

- How Post Graduate Diploma in Management – Development Studies Programme is different from other Management programme?
- The development sector has undergone a sea change in past few decades. Today, non-profit organizations are not seen as only charitable organizations but people look up to them as partners in development. With the changing scenario, the responsibility on the part of development organizations has mounted and good governance and accountability on the part of development organizations has gained momentum. With infusion of various management tools for effective implementation of development programmes and better governance of such initiatives, management education in social development sector has become utmost important.
- To create a cadre of development professionals who can visualize, plan and effectively implement development programmes, EDI in conducting a two-year year full time programme approved by AICTE. Henceforth, PGDM-DS is a two year full time programme approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India, New Delhi. The programme is designed to prepare the students to understand the intricacies of development world and equip them with latest management tools being used in planning and designing of development programmes. The course at EDI is a judicious mix of both theories and management training which enhances capabilities and skills of young professionals to think and work entrepreneur ally in development sector.
- PGDM-DS targets students who want to become social entrepreneurs or want to join development organizations. The course also provides in-depth knowledge to the students who want to start development initiative on their own.
- Whether the programme is recognized by the Government?
- EDI is an autonomous and not-for-profit Institute promoted by IDBI Bank Ltd., IFCI Ltd., ICICI Ltd. and SBI with active support from Government of Gujarat. It is governed by its own board. The brilliance and stature of its Governing Body speaks the standards of the PG programmes. The Chairman and Managing Director of IDBI Bank Ltd. Presides over the EDI Governing Body in his ex-officio capacity. Chiefs or their nominees of other national financial organizations such as IFCI Ltd., ICICI Ltd. and SBI, Chiefs of NABARD & SIDBI, and the Governments represent the Governing Body. The PG Programmes have an Advisory Committee consisting of academia, industry and development sector.
- What is the of pedagogy and evaluation methods?
- The teachers use lectures, group discussions, case studies, projects etc. to deliver the essential inputs on various developmental issues.
- A student performance is evaluated through classroom tests and quizzes, assignments, presentations, mid-term and term-end examinations.
- What are the contents of the programme?
- The programme spreads over six trimesters of 12 weeks each. The content of the programme is designed in such a way that students get exposure to various facets of development work. The courses taught in the programme give insights into practical aspects of development management.
- In PGDM-DS, students have to under go summer internship for a period of 6-8 weeks after completion of the third trimester. Students are attached to reputed development organizations across the country to carry out different projects.
- What are the entry mechanism and its structure?
- For admission to PGDMN programme, aspirant has to appear for EDI Entrance Examination conducted on national level. The admission test includes testing the social awareness, logic & reasoning skills, quantitative aptitude, test of English and Social Entrepreneurial Aptitude Test
- Those who are declared successful in the written test are called for Personal Interviews at different centres.
- The personal interview focuses on commitment to the course and training as a source of learning, subject knowledge, communication skill etc.
- Performance in both these components will be aggregated for final selection for the programme.
- Students with valid CAT / MAT / XAT / ATMA / CMAT scores can also apply for the admission and request the institute for waiver of EDI Entrance Examination. However, such candidates have to appear for Social Entrepreneurial Aptitude test on the day of Personal interview.
- Whether fellowships are available?
EDI will offer fellowships to all the candidates of the course to encourage professionalism in development sector. The fellowship for each candidates will amount to Rs.2,50,000/-. The fellowship will be available form EDI’s resources. Fellowship is on actual fee and not on the hostel and mess charges.
- Is Placement facility available?
- EDI provides placement assistance to PGDM-DS students and till date the placement record is 100 percent. Every year, a campus placement week is organized at the institute where leading NGOs development agencies, companies and public sector organizations visit the campus and recruit our PGDM-DS students. Many organizations also make off-campus offers to the students
- What are alumni doing?
- As per the latest information available, about 90 percent of the alumni are continuing in the development sector in various capacities in grassroots to national level organizations. Some of the alumni are also serving international organizations. Another 5 percent alumni are either pursuing higher studies and about 5 percent are in private sector.
- Are alumni accessible?
- They have demonstrated commitment towards the course and the Institute. Any candidate to know more about the course and the Institute may approach them. References of alumni residing in the location of the aspirants may be obtained from the PGP Secretariat and furnished on demand.
- EDI’s alumni have formed an association and every year alumni meet “ENTREPLEXUS” takes place in month of December
